Roll:Chalk Drawings from Beth Cohen on

Clip: 1:07 minute
Performance: 2.5 hours

Roll: Chalk Drawings is a durational 2.5 hour performance where I try to make chalk drawings of whatever I could draw before the camera moved, using Roll, a previous video performance. This was a performance within a performance. The 25 minute video looped. Every time it looped, I erased the chalk board and started again. I wasn't interested in being accurate, like a blue print might be, but instead giving no greater importance to a door hinge as I would a hand made vase. I drew nothing to scale, only what I was able to see as the video panned the room. The end result was an abstract line drawing that gave no visual insight into the spaces I was drawing--a futile act to try to understand the intersection between time and class.
